The information in the first three sections below has been gathered through an interview with Jagruti Mistry, Accounts Payable Supervisor at [Costain Skanska JV], who work as part of the HS2 project to deliver solutions to infrastructure.
WHO WE ARE
We are a group of third-year undergraduate students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sheffield. Within the PHY340/50 problem-solving module is this group project within which we have the opportunity to research into the possibility of a manned Mars mission with a budget of £100bn and a timescale of 20 years.

On this page, we introduce you to the team behind the project. We outline our professional interests as well as the role we played in the project.
MEET THE TEAM

Demi Mistry
Chris Cotsford
I am an undergraduate student studying MPhys Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Sheffield. My passion for astronomy and stars led me to this degree course, with hopes of pursuing stellar research after graduation. I am also the 20/21 academic year Secretary for the Sheffield Physics society and love the opportunity to ensure the wider Physics community at the University of Sheffield has equal access to opportunities and social events. Through this project, I have been responsible for interviewing outside sources, and researching what sustainability goals must be met for this project.
Studying for an MPhys Physics at the University of Sheffield, I have discovered that a strong interest of mine lies in the applications of Quantum Physics; from the way electrons behave as waves in solid materials to the wavefunctions of multiple particle systems, many underlying concepts can only be explained using Quantum Physics. I also participate in department open days where I hope to share my passion for Physics with new potential students. For this project, I have been responsible for the financing of the mission to Mars.

Padraig Manning
I am an undergraduate studying a BSc in Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Sheffield. I was led to Astronomy by my grandad, who introduced me to telescopes and stargazing from a young age. I am interested this year in exploring the ways Physics can be encouraged to be more inclusive, and am looking into opportunities to teach via the education and outreach module I am taking. For this project, I was responsible for the mission timescale page and parts of the mission equipment (the research and living facilities, as well as the return vehicle).
Eve Rafferty
As an undergraduate student at the University of Sheffield, I study Physics and Astrophysics allowing me to gain knowledge widely throughout the subject. Particular interests of mine involve particle physics and research as well as quantum physics and information. I am passionate about encouraging women into STEM careers and I volunteer on several projects building awareness and accessibility to young women. As part of this project, I have been responsible for the web design and uploading all content as well as the primary researcher for the mission equipment (First and Second Launch, Rovers and Rockets and Shuttles).

Emma Coady
I am an undergraduate student at the University of Sheffield currently studying for a BSc in Physics and Astrophysics. I am most interested in stellar structures and atmospheres and look forward to widening my knowledge and understanding of the topic. For this project, I have been responsible for researching information on the safety of the mission.
